1993. The GDR is history. It is a time for winners, visionaries, opportunists, risk-takers, and losers. People like us, searching for a place in a new world filled with bliss, doubt, curiosity, sadness and hope.

Summer 2023. It's hot, the perfect weather for swimming. But things take a different turn when three friends find a diary written in the Sorbian language from the year 1964 in an abandoned village.

Hoyerswerda is a shrinking, with many of its citizens leaving the city. But eventually one of them comes back and initiates the dance theatre project "A city dances". The rehearsals for "Le Sacre du Printemps" are accompanied by reflections on the sacrifices we all make. Life paths full of disruptions become impressive dance scenes: Proof that one can overcome agony and make life dance.

Hoyerswerda is new, old, avoided, adored, famous and infamous. Since the collapse of the GDR and the loss of tens of thousands of jobs in the coal mining industry, the “former beauty” has lost its significance as an urban settlement. For the past 30 years, younger generations have been moving away, whole neighborhoods lost their purpose and the destruction and demolition of residential areas transformed the city

I asked former residents of Hoyerswerda to send me postcards for a public art installation. More than 140 people answered.

In a 'A City Dances - Le Sacre du Printemps' (The Rite of Spring), 74 residents of the German town of Hoyerswerda are taking a surprising look at the biography of their personal tendencies.
